Measuring Your Walls

Wallbeard wallpaper and wallcoverings are designed to suit any wall or awkward space so whether you have a standard wall or something more complex, we can do it!

Follow these instructions for measuring your wall space.

Please note: You do not need to worry about adding any extra to your measurements to allow for trimming. Our Wallbuilder will automatically add 5cm to the height and width to allow for this. Only add extra if you feel you will need more than 2.5cm at either end or top and bottom.

  • FULL STANDARD WALLS

Measure the full width from edge to edge. Measure the height on both the left and right hand sides and down the middle as they often differ. Use the greater height.

  • SLOPED WALLS

Measure the greatest width and height of the wall from edge to edge, ignoring and slopes. The photo wall mural will be cut away from the slope during installation.

  • WALLS WITH DOORS, WINDOWS AND OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS

Again, simply measure the full width and height of the wall as described previously. Areas for doors, walls, light switches and other obstacles will be cut away during installation.

Installing Your Photo Wall Mural

Once you have measured your walls, selected your material and chosen your photo wall mural image, you can place your order online with us, customising the mural to suit your requirements using our easy to use tools. We’ll begin producing your wallpaper and you can prepare for installation.

  • How to prepare your wall

To ensure your photo wall mural looks its absolute best and lasts as long as possible, you should ensure the wall is properly prepared in advance.

Ideally your photo wall mural would be installed on clean, dry, smooth plaster that has been finished with a good quality primer. Do not use lining paper underneath your mural.

Murals can be installed on matt emulsion paint only if necessary. Use white or off-white so there are no bright or bold colours behind your mural.

We strongly recommend leaving paint for 2-3 weeks to dry if freshly painted to allow any gasses to dissipate.

Once your mural has been delivered, you can begin installation. We recommend two people hang the wallpaper together to ensure the best results and avoid any costly mistakes.

  • WHAT'S IN THE BOX?

When you receive your wall mural you will have everything you need to ensure it can be installed properly.

    What's in the box?

    • – Your wall mural panels, individually wrapped, labelled and numbered
    • – Your wall mural image, divided into panels and numbered so no mistakes can be made
    • – Instructions on how best to hang your choice of wallpaper type
  • STEP 1

Your photo wall mural will be supplied cut to size in panels and it’s best to lay them out flat and leave them to rest for a few hours to prevent curling.

  • STEP 2

Measure out from a wall corner 2cm less than the width of your supplied panels and us e a plumb line or spirit level to draw a vertical line from ceiling to floor. This gives you a straight edge from which to line up your first panel of wall mural.

  • STEP 3

Apply wallpaper paste to the area the first panel will cover using a medium pile paint roller. Apply the first panel, taking care to match up with your guideline, and smooth down with the soft brush or a slightly damp sponge to remove any bubbles or wrinkles. Take care not to squeeze any paste out at the edges. If you do, wipe clear with a clean cloth.

  • STEP 4

Repeat this process for each panel, applying paste ONLY to the area of the panel you’re hanging and taking care to match up the pattern or image without overlapping the paper – all panels are supplied edge to edge and are not designed to overlap. Smooth each panel with the soft brush or slightly damp sponge as you hang it.

  • STEP 5

When all panels have been hung, trim any excess paper at the edges, top and bottom and around fixtures, fittings and slopes with a sharp knife and remove any excess paste with a damp sponge or clean cloth.
